Baca Architects

Baca Architects is an international award winning research led design practice specialising in integrated environmental and high quality design. Baca is internationally recognised for innovation in flood resilience, climate adaptive architecture and spatial planning.

The Practice's work promotes a paradigm shift in thinking by `making space for water` within developments rather than trying to hold it out through traditional defenses alone. Working in collaboration with regulatory bodies, local authorities, developers and privateers - Baca has demonstrated that this approach can be cost effective whilst improving the safety and quality of life for many.

Under Team Principle Richard Coutts' leadership the practice have delivered many firsts, flood resilient policy for the London Borough of Sutton, robust planning principles for DEFRA, planning permissions for large and small developments and the UK`s first amphibious and building regulations complaint floating homes.

Richard is a member of the RIBA`s Policy Team and supports DEFRA`s Core Cities Flood Advisory Group at No. 10 Downing Street.

Most recent publications include: Aquatecture: Buildings and cities designed to live and work with water by RIBA Publishing and the contribution of a new Chapter: Flood Aware Design to Metric Handbook, Fifth Edition.

Baca Architects were `Urban Design Practice of the year 2016` and are regular winners of the `RIBA Practice Based Research Awards`.
