Flood Warning Systems
We are the leading independent provider of flood warning systems to local authorities in the UK, having installed over 650 flood warning sites for over 65 councils and land drainage authorities. Many of the applications that we monitor are trash screens or undersized culverts which suffer from regular blockage; our systems provide early warning to both drainage authority staff, to deploy maintenance teams, and to local residents, to deploy property level protection or trigger local flood plans.
While flood warnings are routinely available from public organisations such as the Environment Agency, these warnings are not appropriate where the "response time" of the catchment is short. This applies to minor rivers and for surface water flooding during storm events.
We have developed an effective flood warning system that uses observed river levels and/or rainfall from our monitoring sites as a basis for flood warnings. Using this system, when thresholds in river level or rainfall are exceeded an alert is sent from our telemetry data loggers to our head office computer servers; the server then sends an automated warning to identified users, such as a rapid-response team, who can then respond quickly at the areas affected - protecting properties and minimising risk.

Flood Prevention Flow Controls

Hydro-Brake® Flood provides large-scale protection at the watercourse level, preventing costly damage and disruption to residents, businesses and essential services.
Hydro-Brake® Flood Alleviation is a highly sustainable, precision-engineered vortex flow control that provides large-scale protection at the watercourse level. It prevents flooding by holding back excess waters in temporary flood storage areas.

Hydro-Brake® Flood protects over 600 properties in Wigan, cutting flood risk to 1%
The town of Wigan, UK was hit by flooding on average twice a year, and had been suffering from floods for more than 30 years.
Over 600 properties in Wigan were exposed to flood risk from the River Douglas and its tributaries every year.
The UK Environment Agency implemented the Wigan Flood Alleviation Scheme, a £12M, two-phase flood protection project that incorporated embankments, flow controls and temporary flood storage, designed in a way that blended engineered solutions with natural features to provide optimal flood protection.
The first phase of the works involved the construction of new and raised flood defence walls and embankments on the River Douglas through central Wigan.
The second phase of the works involved the construction of a 150 m long, 8 m high earth dam across the River Douglas Valley, forming an upstream storage reservoir, and a new 100 m long concrete culvert constructed beneath the dam. Inside that culvert two Hydro-Brake® Flood flow controls provide precisely designed flow control to hold back flood water and store it upstream, protecting downstream properties from flood damage.
The dam has created a potential 400,000 m3 of flood storage extending along a kilometre of the Douglas valley, and the Hydro-Brake® Flood flow controls use this flood storage to prevent flood waters from reaching Wigan. The flood alleviation system now provides greatly increased flood protection, with just a 1% chance of flooding from the river in any given year.
