Keynote Close Up - Daniel Cook

Daniel Cook is head of the Environmental Assessment Department at Ambiental; a leading flood risk assessment, civils, drainage and risk modelling consultancy.

After gaining a BSc Honours degree in Marine Science at Southampton Solent University, Daniel supplemented this with a Masters degree in Coastal Marine Resource Management at the University of Portsmouth.

Daniel has previous experience of working with Mott MacDonald, Phlorum and Hilson Moran as well as Ambiental; where he has developed from a consultant through to Manager of Ambiental Environmental Assessments.

His principal areas of technical expertise are Flood Risk Assessments, Drainage Strategies, UK legislation, policy and standards to ensure developments are safe in construction and purpose.  These assessments have included GIS, numerical modelling and hydraulic modelling, whilst analysing all sources of flooding: fluvial, pluvial, tidal, sewer and groundwater. All of Daniel’s projects have required initiative and good problem solving skills, to be completed successfully and to the highest of standards whilst complying with national/regional policies and guidance.

He has extensive experience of UK planning policies focused to flood, having worked on 1000 + Flood Risk Assessments, Nationwide. Daniel has supported other areas of environmental consultancy and project management and co-ordination of EIAs, in the UK and internationally.

Daniel has project management experience on a diverse range of developments (residential, commercial, power and infrastructure) including EIA’s, whilst coordinating other consultants/analysts and external contractors to ensure projects are successfully delivered and to budget.

Excelling at client liaison and a positive communicator, Daniel can manage a project’s timeframe, finance and budget allocation effectively. He also has a solid understanding of national policy; the NPPF (England), TAN 15 (Wales), PPS (Scotland) and PPS 15 (Northern Ireland) and regional policies, for example Policy F1 – Royal Borough Windsor and Maidenhead.

Examples of his most recent successes include winning contracts to supply flood risk assessments and drainage strategies and design, to a large supermarket chain; residential schemes of 100 + dwellings; power generation schemes (gas fed and renewables); as well as work to support National Rail.

Daniel’s insightful seminar at Flood Expo 2017 will discuss the recent changes in policy relating to flood risk and drainage, and the impact of these changes on planning.
