Ian Gibbs is an experienced chartered building surveyor working as Technical Manager for Cunningham Lindsey, the leading claims management and loss adjusting business in the UK. He has worked within the insurance industry for the last 20 years and has been involved in restoring flood damaged properties resulting from all major flood events during this time period. He has played an important role in the design of the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) flood resilient house project and is currently leading the task group on the resilience of small businesses as part of DEFRA’s resilience round table.
Dr Jessica Lamond is Associate Professor in flood risk management at the University of West of England responsible for furthering research in the fields of flood risk management in the built environment and property valuation. Her areas of expertise include flood risk management, flood insurance and the environmental impacts on property value. She researches in the fields of flood risk management, structural and non structural flood resilience, flood insurance, the role of planning in resilience, the long term financial impacts of flooding, flood damage assessment, benchmarking and standardisation of flood repair, property valuation and the environmental impacts on property price. Jessica has authored over 70 publications on these topics.
Flood resilience: the ultimate challenge for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
Ian and Jessica will provide an overview of the current challenges faced by SMEs in obtaining flood insurance and how this drives their approach to flood risk. The seminar will cover the latest research into flood resilience and detail the steps being taken to improve the uptake of flood resilience amongst SMEs by the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) round table on property level flood resilience.
