Rod holds a degree in Business Administration together with a Post Graduate Diploma in Strategic Marketing from the renowned Kellogg School of Management in Chicago, USA.
After a career in electronics in the Royal Navy, Rod successfully progressed through a number of market development roles for software companies based in the US and Canada.
Returning to the UK, Rod established Shoothill Ltd in 2006 to exploit new web-based mapping and visualisation techniques such as Bing & Google Maps.
In 2012, Shoothill launched Flood Alerts (www.FloodAlerts.com ) on Facebook, the UK’s first live flood warning web-based map system which won the 2012 Guardian Innovation Awards. In 2014 the company released GaugeMap (www.gaugemap.co.uk) a live river level map with 3000 gauges linked to their own individual Twitter accounts. GaugeMap went on to be the winner of the inaugural Open Data Institute Award for Innovation in 2014.
Using Social Media for Flood Warning Dissemination
In this session, Shoothill MD Rod Plummer will explain how the UK is a world leader in using social media for flood warning, and how it is being used by the Environment Agency and Natural resources Wales to warn and inform people about flooding when it occurs. The session will also include live demonstrations of software, and an informal discussion on how social media could be used in the future.
