Adaptive Planning for Effective Flood Risk Management under Uncertainty
The existing, predominantly precautionary approaches used for the long-term management of flood risks are proving to be expensive yet not effective enough in dealing with future uncertainties such as climate change and urbanisation. A fundamentally different approach, based on the concept of flexible planning with optional adaptation pathways will be presented. This approach will be illustrated on the Thames Estuary case study demonstrating the associated multiple benefits.
